Description:

The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning and working environment for students, staff and families and advancing the system-wide implementation of strategies to advance anti-racism, diversity and inclusion.

Dignity Forum is a local Calgary based non-profit who work with groups and organizations to strengthen the presence of human rights education in schools.

A jointly planned symposium between CBE and the Dignity Forum on February 3rd, 2024 is being held as an opportunity for Alberta Teachers' Association certificated staff to explore a deeper understanding of Alberta's omitted history in relationship to human rights and racism, individual understanding of self and positionality, and how educators can further develop their anti-racist teaching practices, beliefs, and behaviours in an educational setting. The symposium will include welcome remarks and setting the context for the day from Ron Ghitter (Dignity Forum), keynotes by Dr. Farha Shariff (University of Alberta) and Sarah Adamako-Ansah (Edmonton Catholic Schools), a panel discussion, breakout sessions, and time for attendees to connect, discuss, and reflect. Attendees will also receive a resource package including both physical and digital resources they will be able to use to further anti-racist pedagogy and practices in their classrooms. The official agenda for the day will begin at 9:00am.

The objectives for what attendees will achieve from attending this symposium include:

A) Understanding the context of Alberta’s human rights and omitted history and how historical experiences shape our current context and work toward becoming anti-racist.

B) Exploring how positionality shapes the perspectives, teaching practices, and knowledge of educators and influences pedagogy.

C) Developing a deeper understanding of anti-racist teaching pedagogy and actions educators can take to develop confidence in discussing race, racism, and anti-racism.

D) Providing an opportunity to discuss, question, collaborate and co-create actions to be more strategic in our pedagogy regarding how to address systemic challenges or barriers to creating anti-racist teaching environments.
